Certified Practical Course in Photojournalism

Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management at Georgian Institute of Public Affairs is announcing opening of the Certified Practical Course in Photojournalism for 20 beginners and practicing photographers.

Languages of instruction are Georgian and English.

The course starts on November 32 and ends on March 26, 2010

Classes meet 3 times a week for 3 hours.

Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management offers a ten-week, certified, professional course in Communications/PR Management for 20 beginners and mid-career professionals. Language of instruction is Georgian.

The program will be offered from: September 28 to December 7, 2009.

The cost of the 10-week program is Gel 850.

“Didi Madloba” from French Students

On April 21-28 the Lille School of Journalism students and professors visited the Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management of the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs. During one week, a group of over 50

 students worked together with their Georgian colleagues on reports and articles about Georgia and shared experience.e.

After returning to Lille, French students dedicated a song entitled “Didi Madloba” (Georgia and for thank you) to their hosts. The song can be downloaded from here. Song lyrics are available here.

 


Presentation of Zurab Zhvania’s Book

On May 3 the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs held a presentation of the English tranlation of Zurab Zhvania’s book “The Priviledge of Our Generation” in the Theatre of Music and Drama. The book which is based on the lecture course that Zurab Zhvania had at GIPA in 2002-2003, was funded with the air of Europarliament.

GIPA also plans to establish Zurab Zhvania Scholarship for the best Masters student of GIPA as well as holding an early student conference on democracy which will coincide with Zurab Zhvania’s Birthday.

Gaga Nizharadze Visits Club “Erudite”

On May 5th the Club “Erudite” at the School of Governance held yet another interesting meeting. This time psychologist Gaga Nizharadze gave a lecture about the Psychology of Love, which turned out to be quite amusing and interesting for the young audience. The lecture developed into an open discussion with a lot of questions from the students.


Tournament in Gudauri 

On 28 March 2008 Georgian Institute of Public Affairs held a mountain Ski Tournament in Gudauri for the sixth time.

This tournament has already become a traditional event, where students, members of stuff and administration of the Institute, journalists and representatives of donor organizations and GIPA partners compete for the title of the best.

The tournament reveals 6 best skiers - 3 women and 3 men. This year the winners were: student of the Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management, Keti Ebanoidze and student of the School of Government, David Dzadzua. The participant showing the worst result, Tengiz Gogotishvili, was awarded with a consolation prize - ceramic teapot

The sponsors of the Tournament this year were People's Insurance, Silk Road Group and Independent Film Project, which fully covered the award fund, and Company Redix, which provided the souvenirs for the winners.

 

Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs Sign the Memorandum of Understanding. 

On the 20th of March, the Ministry of Internal Affairs signed the memorandum of understating with the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs. The official signing ceremony was held at the "Police Academy". The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Rector of Police Academy, Ms. Khatia Dekanoidze and by the Dean of School of Government, Ms. Maka Ioseliani.  

According to the Memorandum, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and GIPA will be undertaking joint initiatives on different matters. 116 employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs completed the certified courses specially designed by the School of Government for the staff of the Finance and Budgeting Department of the Ministry. The Memorandum of Understanding will support the cooperation and strengthen links between Ministry and GIPA.

Training for Regional  Media Managers

 

From 16 to 21 March, GIPA's Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management in cooperation with the Soros Foundation conducted training for the regional media managers from Gurjaani, Rustavi, Gori, Akhaltsikhe, Kutaisi, Ozurgeti, Lanchkhuti, Poti and Batumi. 14 managers of printed media assisted lectures in marketing, management and business development. Oleg Khomenok, an expert especially invited from Ukraine, held classes in newspaper management. Principles of marketing were taught by Zurab Liluashvili and the business plan development - by Gogi Turkia.

Irakli Alasania Visits GIPA

The series of meetings of GIPA students' with famous politicians and public men continues. This time Irakli Alasania visited the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs. During the meeting with students, which was held on the 19th of March, Irakli Alasania spoke about President's Institute, the possibility of conducting Presidential Elections, Strengthening the Judicial Branch, the foreign priorities and about the ways of resolving internal conflicts.

School of Government and Ministry of Culture of Georgia Sign Memorandum of Understanding

On March 18th the School of Government of the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, Monument Protection and Sport of Georgia signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Mr. Nikoloz Rurua, Minister for Culture of Georgia, visited GIPA especially for this occasion.

 Radio GIPA Starts Rebroadcast of BBC Programmes 

On Wednesday, March 18, 2009 the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs held a presentation of BBC programs rebroadcast at Radio GIPA (FM 94.3). The presentation was held in the presence of the Ambassador of Great Britain to Georgia, HE Denis Keefe, renowned Georgian journalists and other guests at the Wine Bar of the Marriott Tbilisi Hotel. The British-Georgian Chamber of Commerce is the main sponsor of the event. 

Radio GIPA, the first English-language, 24 hour FM radio station in Georgia, is run by the GIPA’s Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management. Radio GIPA rebroadcasts programs provided by BBC (UK) and NPR (US) as well as news, music and entertainment shows.

 

"NATO - Substance, Nuances and the 21st Century

On Monday, March 9 at 6:00 p.m. Mr. Lawrence Chalmer, the Director of the NATO Education Center at the National Defense University, Washington, D.C, will hold a lecture especially for GIPA students. The main theme of the lecture is “NATO - Substance, Nuances and the 21st Century". The lecture will be held in the School of Law and Politics on the second floor.

Students’ meeting with Nikoloz Rurua

On the 4th of March, Nikoloz Rurua - the Minister of Culture, Monuments Protection and Sport visited GIPA and met with students of the School of Government. He spoke about the functions and top priorities of the Ministry. Following from the students’ questions, the Minister also mentioned the issues connected with protection of cultural heritage of our country. The meeting was held in interactive regime and lasted almost two hours.

Next guest-speaker through the club "Eruditi"

On the 26th of February, the writer Dato Turashvili visited GIPA and met with students. The main topic of the meeting, arranged through the club "Eruditi", which was founded by MPA students, was the possible socio-cultural links of Georgian and Spanish people. Besides the main subject, the invited speaker also talked about current issues going on in Georgia. The meeting was held in the interactive regime.

Course in Political Science

 

Master program students in Public Administration are currently assisting the special course in the Introduction to Political Science. John Miller, graduate of the Freiberg University in the Political Science of Central and Eastern Europe and the researcher of International Research and Consulting Center is visiting GIPA especially to teach this course

The book presentation was held on February 5th , through the School of Government

 

By the initiative of the organization "GTZ", the research papers prepared by Eka Saneblidze and Otar Kikvidze - graduates of Local Government Master's Program, Georgian Institute of Public Affairs, were issued as a book.

State Minister for Reintegration visits GIPA

 

On January 27th, State Minister for Reintegration  - Mr. Temur Iakobahvili visited the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs. The meeting with the students of the School of Government lasted for two hours and was held in interactive format. 

Mr. Iakobashvili answered the students' questions. The Minister spoke about the reasons and consequences of Russian-Georgian Conflict, he also discussed the case connected with reservists and mentioned the functions of international organizations with regard of above mentioned conflict.

Presentation of Russo-Georgia Conflict Research Center 

On January 27 Georgian Institute of Public Affairs hosted a presentation of the Russo-Georgian Conflict Research Center in the Courtyard Marriott Hotel for the Georgian government, media, NGO and international missions’ representatives.

 The Russo-Georgian Conflict Research Center was established through support of the Open Society Georgia Foundation initial funding. 

The Center will extend the existing knowledge on the subject through a comprehensible, all-inclusive analysis of Russia-Georgia conflict and relations since 1992, i.e. since formal independence of both countries with particular emphasis on issues pertinent to the conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as ethnic grievances in Russia itself.

Feature Reporting Workshop for GIPA Students

MA students at the GIPA Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management have just completed their ten-day intensive training course in Feature Film and Magazine Reporting. Joëlle Steche, French journalist and an author of many documentary films, has come to Georgia especially to conduct the mentioned training. The aim of the training was to enable the students to think about image and sound. As a result of the training the students were able to produce short, 8 to ten minutes feature films without any commentary or text. 

The training has become possible with the support of Canal France International, which has a unique expertise in the fields of production and broadcasting.

 

French TV Journalist Master Classes for GIPA Students

Olivier Michel, French journalist, reporter and anchor, recently finished his classes in advanced TV News at GIPA. The intensive course went on for two consecutive weeks and involved second year master's degree students at the Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management at GIPA. The course used hands on, teaching through practice approach where the students had t actually prepare as in a real time studio environment.
