Two-year English-language master’s degree program in journalism and media management

Twenty students, selected through
competition in the Caucasus and Central Asia, will be trained to assume news and
management positions at newspapers, news agencies, broadcast outlets and
Web-based publications. Instruction will be provided by American, European and
Caucasian journalists and scholars. The program runs two years, and will be
offered in four semesters from September 2009 to May 2011. Tuition of EURO 2000
is required. Additionally, students will have to possess or purchase equipment
for study purposes: photo camera, voice recorder, camcorder, tapes. Also,
students will have to budget for telephone expenses. Full or partial tuition
waivers and/or stipends available upon well substantiated request.
The curriculum is based on a hands-on,
experiential approach, using the latest techniques of fact-based, professional
reporting and writing for both print and broadcast media. Students will have
access to a journalism library, computer labs, the Internet, photo and TV
cameras, TV editing bays and radio equipment. The students will publish a
student newspaper, Brosse Street Journal, and its web version,
www.bsj.ge and create student blogs. Students will produce content for Radio
GIPA at FM94.3.
For international students, two semesters
of the program will be held at their home countries. The core program, the
defense of a thesis/ final project and the graduation will be held in Georgia.
The journalism faculty and curriculum for
the school will be provided in partnership with the International Center for
Journalists (ICFJ) and the Louisiana State University. The program is funded by
the U.S. Department of State and the Open Society Institute. Supplementary
funding and in-kind assistance is available from governments of France, Great
Britain and Poland.
